Fundraising goal met thanks to ‘community and love’ of Sullivan Field, organizers say

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Sullivan Field has exceeded its fundraising goal to restore the historic Grand Rapids ballpark.

Construction crews have been busy working on the project to restore the grandstand built in 1937.

“The wooden grandstand, there aren’t very many of these left in the country, and it would have been easy to tear it down and, you know, put in some concrete and steel, but there’s a lot of memories and a lot of history within those wooden grandstands,” said Paul Soltysiak the co-founder of Fans of Valley, the group behind the restoration.

Soltysiak said the project is moving forward thanks to the community.

“Originally it was $4.25 million and then with all the delays and extra work that had to be done to save the grandstand it jumped up to $5.75 million,” Soltysiak said. “More than 1,600 individuals, corporations, foundations have given to the cause and so that really says something about the community and the love.”…
