ESTES PARK, Colo. (KDVR) — What started as a peaceful morning hike near Alberta Falls quickly turned into what one Texas mother says was a terrifying fight to escape a protective elk inside Rocky Mountain National Park.
Mia Tracy and her 15-year-old daughter, Ella, say they were hiking near the Bear Lake Trailhead around 7 a.m. when they spotted a calf just off the trail.

“We were walking for about another 30 seconds, and the mama came up on the left side, up, and met us on the trail,” Tracy said.
The pair says they never approached the calf and continued walking, but within moments, the encounter escalated.
