SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) —If you’re in downtown Sioux Falls, it’s not an uncommon thing to hear…the train horns.
“When the trains come through downtown, it’s really important for safety for them to make sure that when they go through the crossing, there’s nobody on the tracks, there’s no vehicles. So they sound horns to alert people to clear the area,” City of Sioux Falls Principal Engineer, Wes Philips said.
That’s part of the reason why they installed cross arms at the 6th street train crossing in 2024. This week, they are starting to install more.

“Part of this project is getting upgrades made at these railroad crossing so we can eventually work with BNSF to make this what they call a quiet zone. And that will allow for reduced whistles and horns to be blown,” Philips said…
