Clarksville police urge vigilance to avoid contractor scams

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — The Clarksville Police Department is warning residents to be mindful of roofing and contractor fraud in the area.

The CPD said they want residents to be cautious when hiring contractors for home repairs and improvement projects, especially roofing work following storms or severe weather.

The department said scams involving contractors continue to happen in communities across the country, with many scammers going door-to-door offering quick repairs, discounted prices, or immediate availability. Some homeowners, CPD said, end up paying large deposits upfront only for the work to be left unfinished or never begin in the first place.

CPD is encouraging residents to take a few extra steps before hiring anyone to work on their home, including:

  • Verify the contractor is licensed and insured
  • Check reviews and research the business
  • Ask for references and written estimates
  • Avoid paying the full amount upfront
  • Be cautious of anyone pressuring you to make a quick decision
  • Avoid cash payments whenever possible
