Kent Drug Raids Turn Up Crack, Stolen Gun And Felony Charges

Two search warrants in the city of Kent on Friday turned up what Portage County authorities describe as a sizable haul: suspected crack cocaine, digital scales, drug paraphernalia, U.S. currency, and three handguns. One of those guns was reportedly listed as stolen by the Medina Police Department. At least one person was arrested and taken to the Portage County Jail, and officials say the suspects could face felony counts, including trafficking, tampering with evidence, and possession of cocaine. The raids mark the latest in a series of targeted narcotics enforcement actions in and around Kent.

Who Carried Out The Operation

The Portage County Sheriff’s Office says its Drug & Violent Crime Unit led the operation, backed up by the Portage Aggressive Crime Enforcement (P.A.C.E.) unit and the sheriff’s detective bureau. According to the Portage County Sheriff’s Office, those teams focus on narcotics interdiction and violent crime investigations throughout the county.

What Officers Say They Found

In a Facebook post, the Portage County Sheriff’s Office reports that searches at two Kent residences turned up suspected crack cocaine, scales, paraphernalia, U.S. currency, and three handguns, including one listed as stolen by the Medina Police Department. The post states that one subject was arrested, transported to the Portage County Jail, and is facing multiple felony charges, including trafficking in cocaine (felony 3), tampering with evidence (felony 3) and possession of cocaine (felony 4). Sheriff Bruce D. Zuchowski said the seizure is part of ongoing efforts to disrupt narcotics distribution in Portage County.

Penalties Under Ohio Law

Under Ohio law, tampering with evidence is a third-degree felony, and trafficking penalties depend on the type and amount of the substance involved. See the Ohio Revised Code 92921.12 on tampering with evidence and the Ohio Revised Code 2925.03 for trafficking gradations and penalties.
