- I have 3 sons, so I’m the only woman in the house. I decluttered my attic to turn it into my peaceful, feminine sanctuary. (businessinsider.com)
As a mother of three boys, I’m often the lone woman in a lively, male-dominated household. Finding personal space has always been a challenge, so I made the decision to reclaim the attic and transform it into a serene, feminine retreat that truly reflects who I am.
Life as a boy-mom is vibrant and full of energy. Our days are packed with superhero chatter, backyard battles in the summer, and movie marathons featuring “Star Wars,” “The Hobbit,” and “The Lord of the Rings.”
Though the loud “Boom! Crash!”
of their younger days has mellowed into slang like “Bro! That’s sus,” I still often feel like the odd one out at family meals, where the boys’ shared language highlights the differences between us.
That sense of being on the sidelines sparked a need for my own space.
Seeking a Personal Sanctuary
As I’ve moved deeper into midlife, a time when many women reflect on their identities beyond caregiving roles, I found myself yearning for a quiet spot to explore questions like, “Who am I really?” and “What does it mean to be a woman today?”
Initially, I converted an unused room into a home office in 2019. But when the pandemic brought remote work to my husband, that space became his domain. With all bedrooms occupied, I set up in the living room-but the central location meant constant interruptions from family and even our cat, who had a habit of photobombing my Zoom meetings.
It became clear: I needed a quiet, feminine space all my own.
Decluttering the Attic, One Step at a Time
With no other options, I turned to the attic-partially finished but long neglected. We’d moved in while I was seven months pregnant, and the attic quickly became a storage zone for boxes and hand-me-downs, a space we had simply closed off.
Climbing the narrow stairs, I reminded myself of the Kaizen philosophy: move mountains one stone at a time. Box by box, folder by folder, I sorted through years of accumulated items. Usable goods found new homes through donations, sentimental items were preserved through photos (even if it brought tears), and toddler shoes were packed away for good.
Weeks later, the clutter dwindled from a mountain to a small hill, then to tiny piles-until finally, the attic was empty and ready to be reborn.
Designing a Space That Reflects Me
Most of my life, I’ve shared space-with siblings, roommates, and eventually my family. Now, I had the rare chance to create a room that mirrored the woman I was becoming.
Inspired by the idea of a cairn-a structure built carefully one stone at a time-I designed my sanctuary with intention:
- A meditation nook by the window, complete with pillows, mats, incense, and singing bowls.
- A cozy corner dedicated to reading and writing.
- A spacious L-shaped desk for my work as a solopreneur.
- Walls adorned with inspiring artwork and affirmations that reflect my personal growth.
My Feminine Sanctuary Is Finally Here
A sign on the attic door reads: “The Zen Den – Meditation in Progress, Please Do Not Disturb.” When it’s up, it signals my need for quiet-whether I’m meditating, writing, hosting Zoom calls, practicing origami, or simply being.
For the first time in years, I have a space that honors who I am becoming as a woman. It’s a place where I can hear my inner voice clearly. The only interruptions come from our cat-and I’ve happily granted him a special pass.
This attic transformation isn’t just about reclaiming space; it’s about reclaiming myself.
