Second annual walk held in Charlotte to raise support for shelter pets

CHARLOTTE, N.C (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — Dozens of residents and their furry companions came out Saturday morning to raise awareness and garner support for shelter animals.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Animal Care & Control held the second annual ‘Steps for Shelter Pets’ walk in Uptown Charlotte. Participants raised money to provide vital support, including enrichment, supplies, and specialized medical care.

In 2025 alone, more than 10,800 animals entered our shelter. Each lap walked during the event represents an animal that came through our doors. The organization hoped to raise $54,000 during the event to support its programs.

“It’s a staggering number, and so then that brings us to the other point is it takes a lot of money to care for 10,800 animals, and then also we can’t do it without the support of the community,” said Melissa Knicely, Char-Meck Animal Care and Control.

The event also features vendors, food trucks, and a live DJ. Participants also got to interact with adoptable pets looking for their forever homes or fosters…
