Iowa City shooting victim celebrates birthday while continuing recovery

IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa student Miranda Peters, who was critically injured in the April 19 mass shooting in Iowa City’s Pedestrian Mall, is marking new milestones in her recovery.

Peters, who suffered a gunshot wound to the head and spent more than two weeks in intensive care, recently celebrated her birthday with family while continuing rehabilitation treatment. In an update shared by her family, loved ones said one of the day’s most emotional moments came when they heard Miranda speak.
