Free summer meals available to Midlands kids as school lets out

COLUMBIA, S.C. — As schools across the Midlands break for summer, districts are once again opening cafeterias and meal pickup sites to ensure children continue receiving free meals while classes are out.

For many students, summer break means losing daily access to school breakfasts and lunches. School leaders say summer nutrition programs help bridge that gap for families facing increased food costs during the summer months.

In Richland One, free breakfasts and lunches are available to any child age 18 and younger. Families can pick up a week’s worth of meals every Thursday, with distribution at two locations across the district…
