An inspector found flies in the kitchen and an employee failing to wash his hands during a visit this past Thursday to Willie Jewell’s Old School Bar B Q at Magnolia Plaza in The Villages.
The restaurant, which opened in 2021 at 2161 Everglades Lane, was cited for four high-priority violations, two intermediate violations, and three basic violations, according to an inspection report on file with the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation.
The high-priority violations included:
- Live flies: An inspector found approximately three live flies in the kitchen area. The report noted this was a repeat violation and resulted in an administrative complaint.
- Handwashing issues: A male employee was observed touching a trash can and a wiping cloth, and then continuing to transfer food into a new pan with a spoon without first washing his hands.
- Improper pesticide: A blue can of Raid, which is labeled for household use only, was found in the establishment. An employee discarded the can, and the violation was corrected on-site.
- Plumbing: A vacuum breaker was missing on a splitter added to the mop sink faucet.
The inspector also cited the restaurant for two intermediate violations. The report noted that a food service manager had been in his position for nearly a year without obtaining the proper certification. Additionally, the bottom of a reach-in drawer cooler was soiled with wings and dressing.
Lesser, basic violations included standing water on the floor near the walk-in cooler, warewashing area, and cook line; a wet wiping cloth not stored in sanitizing solution; and a crack under the back door that allowed flies to enter…
