Opinion: Giving Iowa City schools’ Degner new job a shocking mistake

Frustrated residents of the Iowa City Community School District who desire a change in leadership are getting what they want. They’re also getting a slap in the face from their school board.

Superintendent Matt Degner announced May 22 that he will resign from his role June 30. That wasn’t much of a shock, given the financial crisis that has roiled the district since a severe cash shortage and an unauthorized $10 million interfund loan were revealed to the school board in late January.

The shocking part was the news that Degner will be allowed to remain with the district in a high-ranking (and high-paying) administrative position…
