Former Melvindale cop gets six months jail, probation in excessive force case

Former Melvindale police Lt. Matthew Furman will serve six months in the Wayne County Jail after a jury found him guilty of a felony misconduct in office charge in connection with an excessive force case.

Wayne County Circuit Judge Mark Slavens sentenced Furman on Friday, May 29, to three years’ probation, with the first six months served in custody.

Slavens said 99% of police officers do their jobs honorably. Others are “bad apples,” he said…
