Remembering the 2011 Massachusetts tornado, 15 years later

MONSON, Mass. (WWLP) – It was 15 years ago that an EF-3 tornado carved a path of destruction across western Massachusetts.

Western Mass. to see dramatic temperature drop this weekend

It was just after 4 p.m. on June 1st, 2011 when an EF-3 tornado with winds around 160 mph first touched down in the Munger Hill and Shaker Heights neighborhoods of Westfield. It then moved into West Springfield and passed directly over the Memorial Bridge into Springfield. It continued it’s path of destruction through the South End and then into the Island Pond area of the city.

After Springfield, the tornado continued to the east causing major devastation in Brimfield and Monson before finally lifting off the ground in Charlton. The tornado was on the ground for almost an hour and carved a 38 mile path of destruction. Three people were killed as a direct result of the tornado and 200 people were injured.
