KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — New affordable apartments are available for those 62 and older in Karns with the completion of the Willow Place, an affordable housing complex for older adults.
Officials cut the ribbon for Phase III of Willow Place on Monday, adding 30 affordable apartments for adults 62 and older in West Knoxville. Residents must be aged 62 or older and must be earning at or below 80% of the area median income to live in the community. HomeSource of East Tennessee owns the complex. The nonprofit aims to help all people access affordable housing.

The expansion to Willow began in 2024, and at that time, one resident told 6 News that the community needed more resources in Karns. Now, developers say this expansion helps address that need.
“There is a huge, growing population. Many of them are cost-burdened. So it’s very important that we try to stay ahead of that so that they have a place to live,” said Jackie Mayo, CEO of HomeSource of East Tennessee. “We are providing affordable senior housing so that they can remain independent as long as they are able and then able to live within their budget and not have to worry about being cost burdened paying rent.”

Mayo added that she hopes another 30 housing units will be built soon. This will help as Knox County’s senior population (60+) is growing twice as fast as the general population and is expected to exceed 125,000 by 2030. Willow Place also has a huge waiting list…
