Rhode Island budget proposal grows by $523 million as spending debate intensifies

(WJAR) — Rhode Island’s fiscal year 2027 budget proposal is about $523 million dollars more than the 2026 fiscal year budget.

Gov. Dan McKee says the state can afford the spending increase in part because Rhode Island collected roughly $230 million more revenue than expected.

But the state budget continues to grow at twice the rate of inflation, and critics say the state is overspending…
