‘For the farmers’: Thousands of agave plants root at Madera Community College

MADERA, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – Thousands of agave plants are taking root at Madera Community College as part of a new agriculture program aimed at helping Central Valley farmers explore a low-maintenance crop.

Volunteers and staff from Madera Community College and UC Merced gathered on campus to plant nearly 3,000 agave plants across five acres. The project includes more than 20 species of agave, a plant commonly known as the main ingredient in tequila.

But college leaders and researchers say agave could have a much bigger role to play in the Central Valley…
