- I compared barbecue burgers from Burger King, Shake Shack, and Smashburger. The winner tasted surprisingly premium. (businessinsider.com)
A recent taste test compared barbecue-flavored burgers from three popular fast-food chains-Burger King, Shake Shack, and Smashburger-to see which one delivers the best flavor, quality, and value.
Starting with Smashburger, known for its barbecue bacon smash burger priced at $10.86, this option was the most affordable of the three. The burger featured cheddar cheese, applewood smoked bacon, crispy fried onions, and barbecue sauce.
While the bacon impressed with its smoky, well-cooked flavor, the patty was overcooked and dry, and the fried onions absorbed much of the burger’s moisture, resulting in a somewhat dry overall bite. The cheese wasn’t melted enough to help with the dryness, which ultimately left this burger ranking lowest in the lineup.
Burger King’s BBQ Bacon Whopper Jr., priced at $5.92 with added cheese, came in the middle. It included classic toppings like lettuce, tomato, onion, mayonnaise, pickles, and crispy bacon on a sesame seed bun.
The burger was juicy and balanced, with fresh veggies adding moisture without making it soggy. The bacon was crispy but less flavorful compared to the other two.
While it resembled a traditional Whopper and didn’t offer a strong barbecue punch, it was a solid option at an affordable price.
The standout winner was Shake Shack’s Smoky Classic barbecue burger, which cost $13.29. Loaded with fried onions, bacon, thick pickle slices, and a generous layer of tangy, smoky barbecue sauce, this burger delivered a restaurant-quality experience.
The patty was thin and crispy but perfectly cooked to medium, and the cheese was melted evenly. The fried onions were more akin to onion rings, offering a satisfying crunch and flavor without dryness.
The smoky barbecue sauce added a balanced tanginess that complemented the rich flavors throughout. Although it was the priciest option, the quality and flavor made it worth the extra cost.
In summary, while Smashburger’s burger fell short due to dryness, Burger King offered a classic, well-rounded option at a good price. Shake Shack’s Smoky Classic took the top spot with its expertly balanced toppings and bold barbecue flavor. For barbecue burger fans seeking the best taste experience, Shake Shack is the clear winner.
