15-year-old from valley ‘surprised herself’ by qualifying for U.S. Women’s Open

MADERA, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – Anita Lumpongpoung, who moved to Chowchilla four years ago and plays out of Madera Golf and Country Club, is at famed Riviera Country Club in the Los Angeles area this week, preparing to compete in arguably, the biggest women’s golf event in the world, the U.S. Women’s Open.

She got into the field for the LPGA major, when she shot even par over 36 holes, and finished second at the U.S. Women’s Open qualifier at Richmond Golf Club in the Bay Area on May 11th. “I kind of surprised myself with that,” said Lumpongpoung, during a recent break from practicing at her home club in Madera.

Ironically enough, the only golfer to beat her at the qualifier was 17-year-old Chowchilla native Asterisk Talley, who will be playing in her third straight U.S. Women’s Open at Riviera…
