New Orleans judge hands life sentence to convicted shooter in 2022 homicide

An Orleans Parish judge has sent a New Orleans man to prison for life after his murder conviction for a 2022 killing in the 9th Ward.

Criminal District Judge Camille Buras handed down the mandatory no-parole life sentence on Friday to Earl Sylvester, 40, over the killing of Jarrod Miles, who was shot repeatedly on Oct. 9, 2022 in the 1900 block of Port Street.

A jury in April found Sylvester guilty of second-degree murder, obstruction of justice and two counts of possession of a weapon by a convicted felon, ending a four-day trial. Buras tacked on an additional 20 years for obstruction and 10 years for the weapons counts…
