Jimmy Kimmel took a jab at former President Donald Trump’s upcoming Freedom 250 music festival, which is facing mounting challenges as several musical acts have dropped out ahead of the event next month.
During his monologue on the June 2 episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live!, the ABC host didn’t hold back, poking fun at Trump’s recent health concerns and suggesting the former president might want to focus on securing replacement performers for the festival rather than other distractions.
“Shouldn’t the president of the United States have more important things to focus on, like finding a replacement for Milli Vanilli at his Coachella from hell on July 4?” Kimmel quipped.
Milli Vanilli frontman Fab Morvan was the latest artist to pull out of the Trump-backed event. In a CNN interview on June 1, Morvan explained his decision, emphasizing his desire to keep music separate from politics.
“I’m here to, you know, bring people together with music. I’m not into politics, so you hear it first here: I’m not attending,” he said.
Morvan also shared how the festival was initially presented to him. His team in Europe received the dates and information about “The Great American State Fair,” touted as part of America’s 250th anniversary celebration.
Reflecting on his connection to the country, Fab said the opportunity felt special. “I’ve learned a lot of lessons in America… resilience, believe in yourself.
So for me, I felt like it was a special moment, you know, a full circle moment.”
Before Morvan’s withdrawal, other acts including Young MC, Martina McBride, and Morris Day and the Time had already exited the lineup. Fab admitted he became concerned when Young MC pulled out, wondering if there was something he didn’t know about the event. Despite assurances from his team that the festival had no political agenda and was meant to be a “free show for the people,” the departures continued.
Morvan explained his original intent was to unite people through music, offering a nostalgic celebration for longtime fans: “Some people that were there, that would be there, were there when my music came out… Let’s have a good time together.”
The Freedom 250 Great American State Fair is being promoted as a major celebration of America’s 250th anniversary, set to take place in Washington, D.C. The event is planned as a 16-day extravaganza, modeled on a World Fair, running from June 25 through July 10. However, with multiple artists stepping away, the festival’s future and overall appeal remain uncertain.
