One year after the Derrick Street camp reset, city of Huntsville officials said the number of homeless people in the area is on a downward trend.
Community Development Manager Scott Erwin said the area’s homeless number is “static,” but estimated there are about 575 sheltered and unsheltered people. Of those, 273 are unsheltered.
“Our focus is that we want to make sure there is shelter space available, that people have access to get off the streets,” Erwin said during a roundtable on Tuesday. “We don’t believe that living on the streets is a way of life.”…
