North Kansas City approves temporary camping ban ahead of World Cup

NORTH KANSAS CITY, Mo. — North Kansas City Council approved an ordinance temporarily prohibiting camping in public spaces throughout the city during the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

At Tuesday’s city council meeting, City leaders said the measure was prompted by concerns that hotels and other lodging options could fill up as visitors arrive for matches, potentially leading some travelers to seek overnight.

The ordinance prohibits camping and sleeping in public places, including sidewalks, streets, alleys, parks and certain doorways. The measure will remain in effect through July 21 at 11:59 p.m., following the conclusion of the last World Cup match.

The ordinance also outlines procedures for how campsites would be handled by law enforcement. Under the measure, police must provide at least 24 hours’ notice before requiring a campsite to be removed. Any personal belongings collected during a cleanup operation must be stored for 30 days and returned to their owner upon proof of ownership…
