Gabriel Lopez received a non-renewal letter from the Alachua County School District in May, effectively firing him after two years as a kindergarten teacher at Terwilliger Elementary School. He’s now running for the School Board District 1 seat.
Lopez was let go along with three other kindergarten teachers at his school and at least 88 other teachers in the district following the board’s vote to close three elementary schools within the next few years.
