National “Teen Takeover” trend raises concerns, Arkansas police monitoring activity

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. – A growing nationwide trend known as “teen takeovers” is drawing attention from law enforcement agencies across Arkansas, even as some parents argue efforts to prevent the gatherings could infringe on constitutional rights.

Teen takeovers, which have occurred in cities across the country, often involve large groups of teenagers gathering in public spaces. While some events have remained peaceful, others have escalated into fights, property damage and shootings.

The issue recently prompted the Hot Springs Police Department to issue a public warning after officers said they prevented a planned teen takeover from taking place in the city.

In a social media post, the department said, “These takeovers are illegal and usually turn violent, with many teenagers or young adults being arrested or hurt. We will not tolerate any such activities in Hot Springs and have put a plan in place to monitor and deter any similar events.”…
