Historic North Omaha apartment complex breaks ground on major renovation

OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) — A groundbreaking ceremony marked the start of a major renovation at the Ernie Chambers Court Apartments, a project three years in the making.

Construction crews are renovating the historic six-building complex in north Omaha. Jake Hoppe, CEO of Lincoln-based Hoppe Development, said the project started with feedback from the community.

“A lot came out of those conversations, both with community members and with residents, around ensuring the safety, ensuring a pathway for residents to stay on the property and continue to live here, bringing back a sense of activity on 16th Street, and, of course, continuing to honor Senator Chambers,” Hoppe said.

The first phase of construction will renovate the existing buildings and add two more, bringing over 130 new apartment units to the complex. Each unit is restricted to households making less than 60% of the area median income.
