New hire under fire: HCPS security chief appointment sparks debate

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — Hillsborough County Public Schools’ decision to hire former Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Anthony Collins as its new chief of security and emergency management is drawing both praise and criticism.

The district announced Collins’ appointment this week during a school board meeting, where Superintendent Van Ayres highlighted Collins’ more than two decades of public safety experience.
