If passersby look closely at the ornate twin towers of First Presbyterian Church on South Claiborne Avenue, they might notice what city officials have called an “unsafe condition” — threadbare, multicolored ropes straining to hold up 300-pound concrete spires that have a propensity for collapsing in high winds.
And if they look down at the ground next to the church, they might notice the shattered remnants of one fallen spire.
But six months after the city issued a violation and demanded the church take remedial action, the new director of Safety and Permits acknowledged to WWL Louisiana this week that the “safety concerns remain unresolved” even as another hurricane season gets underway…
