John Gottis Grandson Charged After Alleged Attack Days Before Prison for COVID Fraud

Additional Coverage:

Carmine Gotti Agnello, grandson of the notorious Mafia boss John Gotti, now faces assault charges following an alleged violent incident with his girlfriend just days before he was set to begin a prison sentence for COVID-19 relief fund theft.

The 39-year-old reportedly attacked his girlfriend in a jealous outburst late Tuesday night at his Long Island residence after accusing her of infidelity, according to reports from the New York Post. The woman managed to escape the home during the altercation.

Authorities say Agnello pursued her outside and physically assaulted her by slapping and punching her face, placing his hands around her neck, kicking her, and destroying her $2,000 cellphone. He has been charged with third-degree assault, second-degree criminal mischief, and criminal obstruction of breathing. Agnello was released without bail during a court appearance in Nassau County on Thursday.

Earlier this year, Agnello was sentenced to 15 months in federal prison after being convicted of stealing $1.1 million in COVID-19 relief funds, which he reportedly used to invest in cryptocurrency. Despite the relatively brief sentence, he sought to postpone his reporting date, citing plans to donate a kidney to his mother, Victoria Gotti, John Gotti’s daughter.

John Gotti, once the head of New York’s Gambino crime family, was convicted in 1992 on charges including racketeering and murder and served his sentence until his death from throat cancer in 2002.

Carmine Gotti Agnello’s recent legal troubles add another chapter to the Gotti family’s complicated legacy. He was scheduled to begin serving his sentence on June 12.
