AKRON, Ohio — The Akron Zoo broke ground Thursday on what officials say will be the largest expansion in the zoo’s history, a $21 million project that will bring giraffes and several other new species to the zoo by 2028.
The 9.25-acre exhibit, known as the Lehner Family Foundation Giraffe Journey, will introduce giraffes, ostriches, wildebeests and Marabou storks to the zoo’s animal collection.
The centerpiece of the expansion will be a large outdoor savanna featuring a mix of species living together in a shared habitat. Plans also include the Landon & Cynthia Knight Giraffe Conservation Center, which will provide indoor viewing opportunities for guests during the winter months…
