Love Island Stars Mom Defends Him Against Claims He Quit Police Job for TV Show

Beth Reifel Bow has come forward to defend her son, Sean Reifel, against criticism from Pennsylvania Mayor J. William Reynolds regarding his departure from the police force.

On June 3, Bow addressed the controversy on Instagram after Mayor Reynolds suggested that Reifel, 29, left his position as a police officer solely to appear on the reality TV show Love Island, which recently debuted on Peacock. The mayor expressed disappointment, emphasizing the time and taxpayer money spent on Reifel’s training, and lamented the challenge of filling the vacancy left in the department.

Bow countered these claims, sharing additional context about her son’s decision. She explained that Sean had requested leave and clarified details about his law enforcement training, noting that while he had prior experience as a Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Deputy since April 2021, the Pennsylvania department did not cover a full police academy for him.

“I care about facts,” Bow wrote. “Sean came to Pennsylvania with previous experience, and although they provided some training, it wasn’t the full academy. I’m proud of my son-choosing to put yourself out there on a reality show to find love, under the scrutiny of the public, takes courage.”

Mayor Reynolds had stated on May 30 that Reifel’s resignation was frustrating due to the investment in his training and the difficulty in replacing officers, adding, “I never thought I’d see the day in America where reality show participation wins out over being a police officer.”

In the Love Island trailer, Reifel introduced himself by highlighting his law enforcement background, saying, “I’m not a model, not an actor, I’m a police officer, actually. You could be having the worst day of your life, and I’ll just help you sift through that.”

Reifel officially joined the Pennsylvania police department less than a year ago, having been sworn in on August 18, 2025. Love Island USA premiered on June 2, featuring twelve singles spending the summer together in a villa.
