North Carolina high school student killed in alleged robbery attempt: Records

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — An 18-year-old Harding University High School student was fatally shot at a west Charlotte park on Wednesday morning, and newly released court documents suggest the shooting may have stemmed from a planned robbery.

According to Mecklenburg County court records, officers responded just before 11:30 a.m. on June 3 to a call about an assault with a deadly weapon in the 3970 block of Bristol Drive, near the stairwell by the baseball field at Westerly Hills Park.

When officers arrived, they found a young man with several gunshot wounds. Medic pronounced 18-year-old Isaiah Shorter dead at the scene. His family has been notified.

What court documents say

Witnesses at the scene told detectives several people were at the park when gunfire erupted. Two people were seen running into the woods, while another person ran to a vehicle and drove away, leaving Shorter behind, according to court records.

Evidence at the scene

Investigators reported finding multiple shell casings near the top of the stairwell. A toboggan, a broken backpack strap, and a path leading into the woods were also discovered.

Along that trail, detectives found two matching shoes and a vape pen case. Farther into the woods, they found a Louis Vuitton bag with a broken strap. Inside were vape cartridges similar to one found along the trail and several packages of suspected marijuana, court documents state…
