Hartselle alumnus conquers one of Southeast’s toughest ultramarathons

For most runners, completing a marathon is a lifetime achievement. For Hartselle High School alumnus Drew Butler, it represents the beginning of something more.

Butler, a 2010 graduate of Hartselle High School who now lives in Huntsville, recently completed the Cruel Jewel 100, a grueling ultramarathon widely regarded as one of the toughest endurance races in the Southeast. The course covers approximately 108 miles through the mountains of north Georgia and features more than 33,000 feet of elevation gain.

“It took me roughly 46 hours to complete the race, and that was one of the things I was most worried about,” Butler said. “At a previous 100-miler, I started getting really sleepy around hour 18, so I was very nervous that would happen again. Luckily, I had no issues staying awake for this one.”…
