MADISON COUNTY, Alabama — County and utility crews spent Thursday making emergency repairs near the intersection of Wall Triana Highway and Yarbrough Road after a county worker spotted a void beneath the road that officials say could have caused a collapse if left undetected.
Madison County District 4 Commissioner Phil Vandiver said the problem began with a deteriorating pipe causing erosion under the road. The situation worsened when county workers discovered a water main beneath the job site, prompting the crews to dig out the entire roadway to replace the pipe and refill the area.
“The hole was growing, and he thought he could see where that road was sinking in,” Vandiver said. “So, that’s a pretty dangerous situation for it to start happening in one afternoon. And so, we got the equipment out and started digging, and we found out there was a void underneath the road that had the potential to collapse if a large truck had crossed over it.”…
