ZBA approves handful of affordable units

GUILDERLAND — With a number of proposed large-scale apartment projects promising to help ease affordability in Guilderland’s rental market with half-measures, one local building owner recently received approval to double the number of affordable units at his Hamilton Street location.

The Guilderland Zoning Board of Appeals on June 3 unanimously approved a variance request from Sean Bayliss to add additional units to 11 Hamilton St., doubling the number of units from four to eight without expanding its footprint.

The added basement apartments, Bayliss told the board, will help fund fire- and life-safety upgrades to a building constructed in the 1980s and never brought fully up to current code…
