Croft School founder apologizes for lying about finances: ‘I distorted reality’

The founder of a Boston private school who admitted to hiding millions of dollars in debts earlier this year publicly addressed the situation for the first time Friday, sending an apology letter to the school’s staff and families.

Scott Given, founder of the Croft School — which has two Boston locations and a third in Providence, Rhode Island — wrote in his letter that he loved and believed in the schools but was afraid that the financial struggles would lead investors or board members to close them if they knew the full extent of the situation.

“Over a period of years, I lied to many people who trusted me deeply. I lied to families who entrusted me with their children’s education and their hard-earned tuition dollars, to teachers and staff who devoted their professional lives to these schools and students, and to investors and lenders who trusted me with their resources,” he wrote. “I distorted reality repeatedly, including to people who believed in me and who had every reason to expect honesty from me.”…
