Maryland farmers hold out for disaster declaration after major crop loss

  • Late frost, extended heat, and untimely rain have caused significant crop loss for specialty crop farmers in the DMV area.

Some summer produce could be in short supply this year. Late frost, extended days of high heat, and ill-timed rain over the past three months have left specialty crop farmers in a bind.

On April 20, the DMV experienced a late frost, causing detrimental crop loss for farms. Those worst hit are the summer time favorites, “specialty crops,” peaches, strawberries, apples, berries, and grapes. The Maryland Farm Bureau says that 90% of growers have been affected in some way, including farms with total losses.
