Charleston County overdose deaths fall to 5-year low, but recent spike raises concern

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) — Drug overdose deaths in South Carolina’s Lowcountry have fallen to their lowest level in five years, according to the Charleston County Coroner’s annual drug report. But officials and outreach workers warn that recent trends show the crisis is far from over.

The report shows a sharp decline in overdose deaths, dropping from 254 in 2023 to 153 in 2025. Despite the overall decrease, a spike in cases last month has raised concern among public health advocates.

Wake Up Carolina, a nonprofit substance abuse outreach organization, said it responded to more than 30 overdose calls over a 30-day period in May, including seven fatalities.
