Berkeley County opens new 300-Bed jail expansion at the Hill-Finklea Detention Center

BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD) – The Berkeley County Jail, Hill-Finklea Detention Center, has dealt with chronic overcrowding for years, but a recent expansion that is now finally complete is set to change that.

Berkeley County leaders and law enforcement gathered at the new expansion of the Hill-Finklea Detention Center on Monday to mark the completion of its new facility. The nearly $50M project will significantly increase capacity by housing nearly 300 more inmates than before, bringing the capacity to just over 550.

“It was long overdue. Even years ago, when we started, we weren’t sure if the county was in a financial position to take on the project, but we didn’t have much of a choice,” explained Berkeley County Council Supervisor Johnny Cribb. “We were routinely over capacity, sometimes close to twice as many residents as we actually have cells.”…
