Within hours of one another, three earthquakes occur in Tennessee and North Carolina

Three small earthquakes were recorded across eastern Tennessee and western North Carolina within a span of just a few hours, according to data released by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).

Three Earthquakes Recorded Overnight in Tennessee and North Carolina

The first earthquake struck near Friendsville, Tennessee, at 10:48 p.m. It originated from a depth of 18.9 kilometers and measured magnitude 2.3.

A second quake occurred near Etowah, Tennessee, at 3:02 a.m. The tremor originated at a depth of 12.4 kilometers and was slightly stronger, registering a magnitude of 2.4.

The third earthquake was recorded at 6:36 a.m. near Weaverville, North Carolina, just north of Asheville. This quake originated from a relatively shallow depth of 5.3 kilometers and measured magnitude 1.7.
