Rare disease detected in Larimer County

DENVER (KDVR) — Health officials have detected a rare disease in Larimer County and issued a warning ahead of the disease’s most common summer months to transfer to humans.

The Larimer County Department of Health and Environment on Tuesday announced tularemia had been detected in a dead rabbit found in a Berthoud neighborhood and is likely present in other areas as well.

Tularemia is caused by bacteria often found in rabbits and rodents, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, and can transfer to humans through contact with infected animal tissue, inhaling contaminated dust or drinking contaminated water, and through ticks and deer flies…
