At least 12 people lost their lives after a group of more than 10 suspects opened fire in an informal settlement in South Africa on Tuesday night, authorities reported.

The South African Police Service (SAPS) stated that the suspects arrived in a white van outside the Jumpers informal settlement in Cleveland, a suburb of Johannesburg, around 11 p.m. They reportedly entered the settlement through both entrances and moved through the area, shooting at residents and community members at multiple locations before fleeing in the same vehicle.

Emergency responders found eight men and three women dead at the scene. An injured man was taken to a hospital where he later died. Additionally, nine other individuals were hospitalized with gunshot wounds.

Police have launched a manhunt to apprehend the suspects, though no arrests have been made so far, and the motive remains unclear. Investigators, including provincial and district detectives, crime intelligence, and forensic experts, have been deployed to probe the incident and track down those responsible.
