‘Heads or tails’: Salt Lake City Council appoints replacement for Eva Lopez Chavez’s seat through coin toss

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — The Salt Lake City Council have appointed a candidate to replace councilmember Eva Lopez Chavez, who was accused of sexually harassing colleagues and was removed for residing outside of her district. The vote, due to a lack of majority in two previous rounds, was decided by a coin toss.

The Council made a decision to replace Lopez Chavez, who previously represented District Four of Salt Lake City, during their meeting tonight. The newly appointed councilmember, Jennifer Napier-Pearce will fill the term until January 4, 2028.

In the first round of voting, the Salt Lake City Council was split, with councilmembers voting to appoint Jennifer Napier-Pearce (three votes), Scott Little (two votes), Javier Chavez Jr (one vote). This means that the top two, Napier-Pearce and Little, were advanced to round two of voting.
