Council directs city attorney to draft ordinance requiring Pride Flag, reverses bike lane decision

Responding to a decision by Edmonds Mayor Mike Rosen to not fly the Pride Flag in honor of Pride Month, the Edmonds City Council voted 5-2 Tuesday night to direct the city attorney to draft an ordinance to have the flag flown in June.

Also on Tuesday, the Council reversed last week’s decision regarding a six-year transportation plan that would have prioritized a study on the feasibiiity of constructing a bike lane on Main Street from the ferry terminal to 6th Avenue. Following strong pushback from the business community, that plan was amended to move that study from a high priority to a low priority.

Regarding the Pride Flag controversy, Rosen said in a statement that he made the decision not to install the flag because the City doesn’t have a policy governing flag use overall. That’s the same point the mayor made when he decided not to fly the flag in June 2024, although he changed his mind later in the month after considerable public outcry. That year, the flag was installed June 26. The Pride Flag did fly over City Hall in 2025.
