Abbeville searching for new jail space as agreement with Iberia Parish comes to an end

ABBEVILLE, La. (KLFY) — The City of Abbeville is searching for a new place to house misdemeanor inmates after a longtime agreement with the Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office is set to expire at the end of June.

For years, Abbeville Police have relied on the Iberia Parish Jail to house people arrested on misdemeanor charges. According to Abbeville Police Chief Mike Hardy, the department currently contracts for five beds at the facility.

Hardy said losing those beds could create challenges for officers and potentially affect accountability for offenders accused of crimes such as shoplifting, simple battery and domestic violence…
