Strong storms expected in St. Louis ahead of cooler Friday

ST. LOUIS — We have one more day of hot and humid weather. Right now, a weakening area of rain, gusty winds, and some thunder is crossing the northern half of our viewing audience early this Thursday morning. This should clear to the east by the morning rush-hour commute but may still linger across Illinois through sunrise. Skies will clear by late morning, and temperatures warm into the low-to-mid 90s, with heat indices near or above 100 degrees.

Tonight, a strong cold front moves in, bringing the potential for strong-to-severe storms from about 5 p.m. northwest to 8 p.m. across the region. The main concerns for strong storms will mainly be damaging winds, but there is a low potential for an isolated spin-up or two and hail as the storms initially develop in the northwestern half of the St. Louis area. The severe threat tapers late evening as storms move southeast. By Friday morning, that system is long gone, and skies begin to clear. Northwest winds will bring a notable change to our weather on Friday, with seasonable temperatures and lower humidity.

Looking towards the weekend, another system arrives Saturday into early Sunday, returning the rain and storm potential. This weekend does not look to be nearly as hot with temperatures remaining at or below normal…
