Tim Allen Opens Up About Fatherhood, Sobriety, and Personal Growth
In a candid conversation with US Weekly, Tim Allen shared his honest reflections on becoming a father, the challenges he has faced along the way, and the role his 30 years of sobriety have played in his life.
Allen admitted that he “never really wanted” to be a dad, describing parenthood as a “work in progress.” He explained, “I joke about it on stage; I’ve just never been a real fan of children. As people have said many times about parenting, you go through all this [stuff] to get a driver’s license or a passport, but there’s nothing about [raising] children.”
The actor is a father to two daughters: Katherine Allen, from his first marriage to Laura Deibel, and Elizabeth Allen-Dick, whom he shares with his current wife, Jane Hajduk. Reflecting on his parenting journey, Allen noted that his wife sometimes wishes they had more children, believing “you learn on the first two.”
Allen also spoke about the differences in raising daughters compared to his own upbringing in a family of seven boys and two girls. “It’s a very different world to me with girls.
I have a different view of what will make a strong woman,” he said. Rather than focusing on typical “girl stuff” like clothing and gossip, Allen prioritized teaching life skills such as financial literacy and self-sufficiency, which he believes are valuable for all children.
Over time, Allen has come to appreciate the unique bond he shares with his daughters. He described how his older daughter occasionally reminds him of lessons he taught her, saying, “You actually listened.”
The actor has also been open about his struggles with addiction. He revealed that he was not sober during much of his eldest daughter’s early years but has since made amends.
“With the younger one, I see how much different it is when I’ve been sober almost 30 years. She never knew any of that guy,” Allen reflected.
He added that Katherine does not hold his past against him.
As the release of “Toy Story 5” approaches on June 19, Allen looked back on the difficult times that shaped him. He candidly discussed losing focus after college and getting involved in criminal activities that led to two years in prison.
“When I was incarcerated, I started reading books about men and women who had been successful out of nowhere, and I started focusing on where I wanted to be,” he recalled. “I did not want to do that ever again.
I humiliated my family and friends and myself. I did not want to make that mistake again.”
Tim Allen’s journey-from troubled beginnings to sobriety and fatherhood-reflects a story of personal growth and resilience, one that continues to evolve with time.
