Ms. Cheap: Steve Brown retiring as Hendersonville Samaritan Association executive director

Steve Brown has been the face of Hendersonville’s Samaritan Association for 28 years – ever since he was named its first executive director almost three decades ago and set about making the organization the “go to” place for people in need.

He has seen (and overseen) tremendous growth in the organization’s reach and in the need in the community for its services.

Samaritan’s programs include a very active food bank, which is stocked with food from individuals, generous area groceries and Second Harvest, as well as help with utilities, mortgages, rent, medicines and other urgent needs. “We have repaired cars, we have paid for a funeral, we have bought a headstone,” he said.

“The store is also a ministry, people need clothing and shoes and household goods that they can afford,” Brown said. “Our prices are very reasonable.”…
