Free teen driver safety course offers life-saving skills this weekend

WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) – WICHITA, Kan. — A nonprofit organization is offering a free driver safety course this weekend designed to teach teenagers how to handle dangerous situations behind the wheel.

The B.R.A.K.E.S. program, which stands for Be Responsible and Keep Everyone Safe, will hold training sessions at Heartland Credit Union Arena in Park City during the weekend of June 13 & 14. About 70 seats are available for the weekend classes.

“This is not what teens learn when they go to get their license,” said Jeff Perlman with B.R.A.K.E.S Teen Driver Safety. “These are putting teens behind the wheel in situations that replicate potentially dangerous situations that help them learn how to drive away from it safely.”

The three-hour course puts students through five different drills with professional instructors, focusing on muscle memory and repetition. Perlman said the program teaches proactive driver training, helping teens anticipate and navigate out of dangerous situations…
