George Crandall, the architect largely responsible for Portland’s iconic Big Pink skyscraper, died Tuesday. He was 88.
Crandall died of cancer at The Watermark at the Pearl retirement community in Portland, his daughter said.
Raised in rural northern Canada, Crandall worked a series of rough-and-tumble jobs before coming to the U.S. and settling into a Portland architecture career. He eventually became an urban planner whom observers say influenced several of Oregon’s walkable towns and cities…
