Off-Duty firefighter saves choking toddler at Ardmore restaurant

ARDMORE, Ala. (WHNT) — A quick response from a local firefighter is being credited with saving the life of a one-year-old child who stopped breathing while dining at a restaurant in Ardmore.

On May 14, Battalion Chief John Penny with Toney Volunteer Fire & Rescue was having lunch with his wife at Mildred’s when a child began choking.

Without hesitation, Penny rushed to assist the child. Using his emergency training and experience, he quickly assessed the situation and administered back blows, successfully clearing the child’s airway…
